Hi Shelly. This site has been used for those looking for homeschooling resources in Bastrop County. I would suggest that you join one of the groups listed. You will get a lot more support and feedback. There are a couple of small private schools around Bastrop. Off the top-of-my-head I can only think of the name of Cornerstone Academy, but there are more. There is also the One-Day Academy. It is a mix of private and homeschooling. The teachers teach one day a week, and the student completes the work at home with parent oversight the rest of the week. There is also a Protestant Christian co-op in Bastrop that is pretty organized. They do classes that are parent led. Finally, you can homeschool her yourself. I guess it depends what type of education will work for your family. My favorite groups are BACHOS (Bastrop Area Christian Homeschoolers) and the Bastrop County Homeschoolers. You may also want to consider taking a Smoothing the Way class, if you decide to homeschool her yourself. -Dominica
I just started homeschooling my two boys this year. 8th and 4th grades. I have homeschooled them before, so I’m not as overwhelmed. It really has been great. There’s a lot of advice I’m sure many people could give. The thing I think most important is IF you do homeschool, get a good curriculum from a school that is ACCREDITED. This is more important for high school kids. We use Kolbe Academy, but there are others. Gook luck, Ann
I have a daughter that is in her 2nd semester of sophomore year at Bastrop High School. She doesn’t want to attend anymore so I was wondering if there was a group or small class I could take her to. I don’t know the 1st thing about homeschooling so I would really appreciate the help.
There are groups. Some of your best options might be to look at the homeschooling co-ops, One Day Academy (for classes that she can’t do alone and you don’t want to teach). The yahoo group has a list of groups in the area. The list isn’t exhaustive, but may be helpful. In addition several families have had very good results with “cyber schooling”. You can do school online either through public school (yes, public schools now have their own homeschooling curriculum) or another private source like Kolbe Academy, Kahan Academy, University of Texas, Great Books Academy, Calvert, etc….I don’t have any teens yet, so some of you moms with teens please chime in.
I am a public school teacher at the elementary level and have been for the past 11 years. I am concerned about the school finance crisis on many levels. My main concern is that my district is looking at cutting a ton of staff positions and I’m afraid I could be one of them. Another concern I have is that both of my girls go to the school I teach in and they will have a lesser education if they cut the experienced teachers or cram classes with too many children. I am wondering how the home schooling thing works. Are there teaching opportunities in home school settings or do I just sit at home and go through a curriculum? I need to know which is the lesser of the 2 evils. It is terrible to try to learn from an inexperienced who is loaded with twice as many students as they should have. However, sitting at home and working through a boring self paced workbook with not interaction among peers is just as terrible. I’m a good teacher but I would be kidding myself if I assumed that my way is the highway. I like having other teachers interact with my girls because they have a different way of putting something than I might have. Would someone please let me know if I am able to teach other students in a home school setting as my job or is it all on a volunteer basis with stay at home moms.
There are many ways to share your experiences as a teacher. Some of which pay money, while others will serve for social interaction. Here are some examples: One Day Academy (paid positions), co-op teacher, field trip coordinator, tutoring, getting paid to home-school another person’s child, and volunteering. Additionally, most moms find the public school model of teaching is useful for a large group of students, but is less effective for just a few. Homeschooling just a few children allows greater flexibility. You are better able to go in depth, do fun projects, incorporate field trips, and move faster! I haven’t found homeschooling to be boring at all (and I’m not a particularly fun teacher). Instead, we get our work done in less time than public school students (due to fewer students and better behaved students). We have play-dates, classes, and parkdays for the kid’s interaction. However, just as important, is interaction with peers for yourself. We have mom’s night outs, parkdays (mom’s talk), Bible studies, game nights, etc.
Hi! Is there any way to send email or a private message to the host of this blog? I’m new in town and have a few questions off the forum about the homeschooling community here in Bastrop.

Hi, Dina -
There are two main yahoo groups for the area that I know are current:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/BACHOS
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Bastropcountyhomeschoolers
They are rather active groups and there are lots of updates on local activities, park days, plus general home schooling support. Hope this helps!
